Toshiba 42X3030DB Calibration Settings
Ideally you should be allowed to change the settings depending on your input source so that you can achieve the best picture for each input, but unfortunately the Toshiba 42X3030DB doesn't give you this option. Ah well, at least you only have to do the work once.
Similar to most other LCD TVs that are shipped straight from the factory, by default the Toshiba 42X3030DB is set to Picture 1 Dynamic mode, where contrast and brightness are artificially increased to give the false impression of a vivid image. While this may prove to be an effective tactic on the shop floor to attract attention, in the home environment even the most tolerant of viewers would be put off by such garish image.
As such, the first thing you should do is to switch it to Picture 3 mode, which lowers the contrast and brightness to a palatable level. Because the black level on the Toshiba 42X3030DB is average at best, you may elect to lower the backlight even further so that the deeper blacks bestow image with more depth and "pop".
The Toshiba 42X3030DB comes with an impressive colour management system, meaning that you can adjust the hue, saturation and brightness for all the primary (red, green, blue) and secondary (yellow, cyan, magenta) colours. Of course you can try and eyeball to arrive at a settings you like, but for the most accurate result it is recommended that you use proper calibration tools or enlist the services of a professional.
